Our relationship with the Craft
Royal Arch Masonry is the most popular and well established
of the orders that create additional scope for Craft Freemasons
to extend their Masonic interest
and research. There is a very
close relationship between Craft
Freemasonry and Royal Arch
Masonry. Candidates for Royal Arch
Masonry must be members of a Craft
Lodge and have held the degree of
Master Mason for at least 12 months.
Joining Royal Arch Masonry is a natural
path of progression and opens up to
members areas of knowledge that are
compatible and highly complementary.
Royal Arch Freemasonry is often termed the 'completion of
pure antient masonry' and is recognised by the United Grand
Lodge of Queensland as part of the core Masonic family. Both
the United Grand Lodge of Queensland and the Supreme
Grand Royal Arch Chapter of Queensland are independent,
sovereign bodies but enjoy a close working relationship.
What is our Order like?
A Royal Arch Chapter confers
a sequence of degrees that
are divided into two stages.
The first stage consists of the
Mark degree, followed by
the Excellent Master Mason
degree and culminating in the
degree of the Holy Royal Arch.
The second stage comprises
The Royal Ark Mariner, The
Cryptic Council and the
Red Cross of Babylon. In all
(including the Chair degrees) a
Royal Arch Chapter can confer
a total of 18 degrees on its members.
The Degree of the Holy Royal Arch is founded upon the
destruction of the First and the building of the Second Tèmple.
The ceremonies of the Degree have an interesting and graphic
historical setting, and a profound and reverential moral
significance. The Royal Arch Degree is the complement of
the Sublime Degree of a Master Mason, the unfolding into a
second volume of the history of that which was lost to its final
recovery. It is a rich and profound extension of the Masonic Journey.
Why you should consider joining?
After receiving the singular honour of being raised to the
Sublime Degree of a Master Mason, the curious Craft
Freemason may well ask, "What's next?", in terms of
their Masonic journey. Certainly the Third Degree raises
as many questions as it answers, both historically and
philosophically. What happened to the Master's Word?
What happened to the Temple? Where can I learn more of this
wonderful story?
The Royal Arch provides an ideal
philosophicaÌ pathway for Craft
Freemasons to continue their
journey of self discovery. It places
in context events which add to
the allegorical backstory of the
events of those times and in doing
so reveals more of the underlying
teachings of the Fraternity.
This interlaced sequence of Craft
and Chapter degrees indicates
how integral they are to a more
complete appreciation of the
Masonic story.
